Routing & Switching
The very basic functions of any network is routing and switching, with companies demanding more connectivity with their clients and customers, by means of applications and internet, these network functions have become a key component of the business network environment. Routing and routers are used to connect multiple networks together and to the internet, by sharing an internal connection among themselves. Switching devices, on the other hand, are used to manage connections and devices on the same network as your house.
No matter the scale of your infrastructure, these two functions always play a key role in your network ecosystem. Their importance can be understood by the following services that they enable:
a) Shared application usage, hence improvised productivity.
b) Instant access to information on the network and efficient information management.
c) Improved network responsiveness and access to customer information.
d) Significant reduction in infrastructure cost and improved security.
e) Enabling Secure around the globe Remote Access.
Over the years, we have seen a growing change in the use of information devices, with growth in virtual teams and mobile workforce, these networks functions and the aspirant certified in their usage, hold prime responsibility.
The Two Tracks by Cisco
Understanding these business requirements, the networking market leader Cisco came up with a number of certified training tracks to enable learners and network professionals learn the key aspects of the technology. Routing and Switching comprise of a Professional Level and an Expert Level Training Track as listed below:
Cisco Certified Network Professional (CCNP) Routing and Switching: CCNP Routing and Switching as it is called, comprises of three parts Routing, Switching and Troubleshooting. Network professionals who clear this exam are expected to hone the ability to plan, implement, verify and troubleshoot any wide area enterprise network. This also means they can work in collaboration with specialists on security, voice etc.
Cisco Certified Internetwork Expert (CCIE) Routing and Switching: CCIE Routing and Switching is an expert level certification, comprising of a written and lab exam. Professional owing this certification holds a prestigious place in the network community and are capable to plan, operate and troubleshoot complex, converged network infrastructure.
Requirements by Each Track
Both these technology tracks have specific requirements for the individual planning to follow them, below are the details enlisted:
CCNP Routing and Switching: This is a professional level certification and candidates pursuing this certification and training path are expected to have a minimum one year to three years of professional experience in roles like network engineer, support engineer, network administrator etc. The candidates have required three exams as listed below:
a) 300-101 ROUTE | Implementing Cisco IP Routing (ROUTE)
b) 00-115 SWITCH | Implementing Cisco IP Switched Networks (SWITCH)
c) 300-135 TSHOOT | Troubleshooting and Maintaining Cisco IP Networks (TSHOOT)
This training and the knowledge forms a key foundation in the career of a network engineer
CCIE Routing and Switching: This is an expert level certification and candidates clearing them must pass a two hour written as well as an eight-hour lab to earn this credential.
a) CCIE Written Exam (400-101 CCIE Routing & Switching)
b) CCIE Lab Exam
Both these exams are required to be taken at a Cisco-authorized Pearson VUE testing center.
Training Material and Resources
Aspirants can opt for multiple resources at their convenience. There are training institutes that provide hands-on experience and training for these tracks as well as professional guidance. Study materials are also a part of the exam kit once you register for one.
